My favorite Spanish expressions (to be updated as I discover more)

  • Soy tuyo. In English, this phrase means the term of endearment “I’m yours.” If you break down the word tuyo tu meaning you and yo meaning I – it the expression is literally saying “I am you and I together as one.” There are a lot of things that are beautiful about that.

  • Esta muerte. There are two ways to say to be in Spanish: ser, which is usually used to describe permanent forms of being and estar which is usually used to describe temporary forms of being. There are only three personally descriptive words which always, always use estar: casando (tired), contento (happy), and muerte (dead). It’s pretty logical that you can’t always be happy or tired. But the phrase esta muerte is a little more existential. In two words, it’s saying that you are never permanently gone after you die. There are a lot of things that are beautiful about that as well.
