Episode 474: Back to School
Chronic stress is scientifically proven to be one of the biggest determinants of overall health. In Chapter One of this episode of This American Life, Ira Glass and Doctor Nadine Burke Harris discuss studies that show how poverty-related stress can affect brain development and inhibit the development of non-cognitive skills.
If you geek out about public health things like I do, you can read a paper I wrote during a seminar on social epidemiology which summarizes all sorts of things about the effects chronic stress in relation to racism in the United States.
